Context of the mandate
Help open doors for adults who need help with literacy! We’re looking for English-speaking volunteers to give one-to-one or small-group courses to adult learners in reading and writing. Tutors meet with our learners once a week for 1 to 2.5 hours. Volunteers with a teaching background are welcome, but teaching experience is not necessary! We also welcome volunteers interested in supporting learners in math and digital literacy. Schedule: 1 to 2.5 hrs / week
Tasks
Meet with an adult learner once a week for 1–2.5 hours to provide one-on-one or group tutoring and support. Help learners build their skills according to their individual learning goals, which may include reading and writing, numeracy, or digital literacy. Support learners in building confidence and independence.
Desired qualifications
No teaching experience needed. We are looking for people who enjoy helping others and who have an interest in supporting adult learners in achieving their learning goals. Good English skills, patience, good listening skills and an encouraging attitude are important. Previous experience in tutoring, teaching or mentoring is an asset, but not required. Training and support will be given.
Expected level of involvement
Meet with an adult learner once a week for 1–2.5 hours to provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring and support. Tutors are ideally able to commit to volunteering for three months or more.
