Context of the mandate

Welfare Avenue is a student-led registered charity that has delivered hot meals, food baskets, hygiene products and clothing to people facing homelessness and food insecurity in Montreal since 2020. Our Sunday events reach over 320 people each time across 7 shelter locations, carried by a community of 200+ volunteers.

Our team of over 35 volunteers across Montreal and Toronto changes with every school year, which makes HR one of the most important seats in the organization. We are looking for a Human Resources Co-Lead to run HR side by side with our current HR Lead: recruitment, onboarding, team records, and the policies and check-ins that keep volunteers engaged and supported. You share the department between you, coach an HR Coordinator and report to the co-executive directors.

This is a chance to run a real HR function end to end, from the job posting to the exit conversation, for a growing charity.

Tasks

• Co-lead the HR department with the HR Lead: weekly check-in, shared priorities, clear ownership of each file;
• Run the recruitment pipeline with the HR Coordinator: postings (CABM, LinkedIn), screening, interviews with team leads, offers;
• Own onboarding: accounts and tool access, the onboarding journey in the Welfare Avenue Hub, 30-, 60- and 90-day check-ins;
• Keep team records, roles and job descriptions current across both cities;
• Draft and maintain HR policies, agreements and the volunteer code of conduct;
• Lead retention: engagement check-ins, recognition, and exit conversations when people move on;
• Support team leads on people questions, and report HR goals and numbers to the co-executive directors and the board's HR committee.

Desired qualifications

• Studies or experience in human resources, industrial relations, psychology, management or a related field;
• Experience recruiting or onboarding people, in a workplace, a student association or a volunteer organization;
• Discreet and trustworthy with personal information;
• Organized and reliable: you follow through on every candidate and every new joiner;
• A warm communicator who makes people feel welcome and supported;
• Bilingual French and English is a strong asset.

Expected level of involvement

Minimum 6 hours a week, long term (at least 3 months, ideally the full school year). Remote, on your own schedule, with a weekly online HR meeting in the evening and occasional interviews scheduled with candidates.
