Context of the mandate
Are you a calm and patient person who loves helping people? Are you interested in teaching/coaching, information technology, working with older adults, or have a background in technology? We're currently recruiting Technology Mentors to support workshops in Pointe-Claire and Montreal, starting this September. We're also looking to grow our base of Montreal-area mentors to support local events and clients remotely across Canada as soon as possible. As a Technology Mentor, you will play a crucial role in empowering seniors through free technology training and support. Volunteers will undergo Connected Canadians' comprehensive training program, equipping them with the necessary skills to become effective mentors. The training covers the Steps of Service during a typical client session, guidance on working with seniors with varying impairments and needs, online security best practices, and more.
Tasks
Volunteers are matched with clients based on skills, availability, and client needs.
Desired qualifications
Strong spoken and written communication skills in both English and French Comfortable using everyday technology, including smartphones, tablets, computers, email, video calling, and common apps Patient, friendly, and comfortable supporting older adults with different levels of technology experience Able to explain technology clearly, simply, and at an appropriate pace Reliable, respectful, and willing to learn Connected Canadians’ processes and approach to client support Comfortable working with people from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds Able to adapt to different learning styles, accessibility needs, and levels of confidence with technology Available to participate in in-person volunteer opportunities in the Montreal area Additional languages are an asset Previous experience in technology, customer service, teaching, mentoring, community work, or supporting older adults is an asset, but not required No formal technology education or certification is required. Training and support are provided by Connected Canadians
Expected level of involvement
This is a flexible volunteer role designed to fit around your availability. Volunteers can support Connected Canadians in two ways: In-person technology workshops in Montreal, typically about 2 hours per session. Workshops are offered regularly, including weekly opportunities, and volunteers can sign up for sessions that fit their schedule. Virtual one-on-one technology support sessions with older adults, typically about 1 hour per session. Sessions are usually held over Zoom, with telephone support also available depending on the client’s needs and preferences. There is no expectation to volunteer every week. We are looking for volunteers who can participate on an ongoing basis and choose opportunities that work with their availability.
