Recruiting volunteers: attracting and engaging committed people

Recruiting volunteers: attracting and engaging committed people

This training explores recruitment as the first step in the volunteer experience. A clear, realistic, and welcoming volunteer opportunity already influences how people understand their role, the quality of the match, their sense of trust, and their ability to envision themselves getting involved.

It encourages organizations not only to fill their needs, but also to create meaningful, well-defined, accessible, and purpose-driven opportunities for engagement.

The training also invites participants to reflect on the diversity of today’s volunteers’ profiles, availability, backgrounds, motivations, and realities.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Clarify their organization’s volunteer needs;
  • Distinguish between organizational needs, tasks, and volunteer roles;
  • Develop realistic, engaging, and accessible volunteer roles;
  • Write or improve clear, motivating, and inclusive volunteer opportunities;
  • Diversify their recruitment strategies;
  • Better align organizational needs with volunteers’ availability, motivations, and realities;
  • Identify barriers that may limit access to volunteering;
  • Better communicate expected contributions, engagement conditions, support provided, and the role of volunteers within the organization’s mission.
