Context of the mandate
Foyer du Monde temporarily shelters families in precarious situations, many of whom have school-age children. To support their educational journey and promote their success, we are looking for volunteers to provide homework help to the children and youth in our care. The role involves guiding the young people as they complete their homework and school assignments, helping them better understand certain concepts, and encouraging them to develop good study habits and greater independence. Beyond academic support, the volunteer’s presence provides a calm and structured environment dedicated to learning, while helping to build the young people’s confidence and motivation. Through your involvement, you make a tangible contribution to supporting their academic progress and providing them with an environment conducive to learning and growth.
Tasks
Help children and teens with their homework and school assignments; Explain certain concepts and answer questions based on the student’s needs and abilities; Assist with organizing work, reading instructions, and preparing for assessments; Encourage the development of good study habits and independence; Provide a calm, positive, and encouraging environment that fosters concentration and learning; Recognize each young person’s efforts and progress, while respecting their individual pace; Notify the volunteer coordinator of any special situations or needs that require follow-up; Adhere to Foyer du Monde’s guidelines, confidentiality policies, and instructions regarding support for children and young people.
Desired qualifications
No teaching certification is required (but is a plus). Above all, we are looking for someone who is patient, reliable, caring, and comfortable working with children and teens. Desired Qualities and Skills: Prerequisite: A criminal background check is required for any volunteer work involving minors.
Expected level of involvement
We are looking for volunteers who are available for about 1 to 2 hours per week, ideally on a regular basis. Homework help mainly takes place after school (between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.), depending on the children’s needs and the volunteers’ availability. To ensure continuity for the students, a commitment of a few months is preferred. The schedule is based on the volunteer’s availability and agreed upon with the volunteer coordinator. Consistency, punctuality, and reliability are particularly important for this type of support.
