Context of the mandate

A neighbor, a source of support for a more peaceful end of life. Be that source of support by visiting and accompanying people at the end of their lives.

About Communauté Compatissante Montréal: We are a collective of citizens and community organizations who come together to reflect on end of life, grief, and significant loss. We identify solutions to the challenges faced by those going through these experiences and put them into action in collaboration with members of civil society.

Location(s): Home visits and accompaniment to off-site appointments in the following neighborhoods: Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Villeray, Rosemont, Plateau-Mont-Royal, Ville-Marie, the Sud-Ouest, Verdun, and Île-des-Sœurs. 

Tasks

What type of activities can you expect:

• Weekly home visits to the person being supported;
• Accompanying the person to appointments or any other activity they consider important;
• Ability to share pleasant moments in daily life;
• Being a supportive presence and a listening ear in the life of a person at the end of life;
• Weekly one-hour team meetings via Zoom.

Desired qualifications

Mandatory requirements:

• A criminal background check will be required;
• Must have sufficient proficiency in French to hold a conversation.

Skills:

• Experience and/or comfort discussing end-of-life issues and conditions;
• Ability to be in close contact with someone nearing the end of life;
• Interest in understanding and supporting the person’s natural support network;
• Willingness to advocate for and promote human rights;
• Calmness, empathy, discretion, respect, confidentiality, and good self-awareness and emotional management;
• Adaptability to changes in the person’s life along the way;
• Comfort working independently in the field and demonstrating strong autonomy;
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Expected level of involvement

-About 2 hours per visit with the person nearing the end of life;
-One hour of mandatory weekly team meetings via videoconference to share experiences from the pairings, interact with other volunteers, and receive training related to providing support;
-Pairings last an average of 3 to 12 months, depending on the needs of the person being supported and how their situation evolves.
