Context of the mandate
We are actively seeking volunteers to go for a walk outside with a senior and/or to make friendly visits to a CHSLD.
The goal is to break the isolation of seniors in Petite-Patrie by developing connections with them, whether over a coffee or a walk around the neighborhood.
Tasks
- Visit residents regularly to help alleviate isolation and promote well-being.
- Provide a warm and caring presence.
- Engage with residents and practice active listening.
- Accompany a resident on walks inside or outside the long-term care facility, depending on the resident’s abilities and the facility’s guidelines.
- Accompany residents to common areas, the garden, or the cafeteria.
- Suggest simple activities based on the resident’s interests: reading, board games, conversation, music, etc.
- Encourage participation in recreational and social activities.
- Respect each resident’s pace, choices, independence, and limits.
- Be attentive to any needs or changes observed in the resident and report any concerning situations to the supervisor.
- Follow safety and confidentiality rules, as well as staff instructions.
- Maintain a respectful and consistent relationship with the resident(s) under your care.
Desired qualifications
- Enjoys interacting with older adults;
- Is a good listener, patient, and empathetic;
- Is able to build a relationship of trust with residents;
- Enjoys conversations, discussions, and spending time with others;
- Is comfortable accompanying a resident on walks, according to the resident’s abilities and the long-term care facility’s guidelines;
- Respects residents’ pace, choices, privacy, and independence;
- Is reliable, punctual, and responsible;
- Respects confidentiality and the CHSLD’s operating rules;
- Is able to commit on a regular basis to foster a stable relationship with residents.
No specific experience required
*We require criminal background checks
Expected level of involvement
A few hours per week or per month. Minimum 3-month commitment.
