Context of the mandate

Monthly Dignity is a bilingual Montreal-based registered charity working to end period poverty. We distribute free menstrual products through a network of 75+ community partners across the Greater Montreal Area, offer menstrual health education, and advocate for menstrual equity across Quebec. We are recruiting several new members to our Board of Directors, including directors interested in standing for officer roles (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer).

We are a young charity that has grown significantly over the past three years. Our programs and outreach work are actively expanding, while our governance practices continue to develop. Most of our current directors are concluding their service in the coming months, which opens up room for a new cohort to help chart our strategic direction and strengthen how the Board works.

New directors will come on progressively over the coming months, with onboarding support and handover from departing directors and staff. There will be ongoing opportunities for skills development and capacity building throughout directors’ tenures.

Tasks

• Board meetings: approximately 10 to 12 per year, mostly virtual, plus the Annual General Meeting (September/October) and occasional additional meetings as needs arise. We ask directors to attend consistently and to let the President and Executive Director know when they can’t make a meeting.
• Committee participation: the incoming Board will establish standing committees, and most directors serve on at least one.
• Strategic planning: an in-person onboarding and alignment session involving staff is planned for the coming year.
• Ambassadorship: directors help spread the word about our mission within their networks and attend occasional events on our behalf.
• Term length: two-year terms, renewable up to a maximum of three terms.
• Confidentiality and conflict of interest: directors sign a confidentiality undertaking when they join and complete a conflict of interest declaration each year.
• Compensation: these are unpaid, volunteer positions. Travel and board-related expenses are reimbursed.

Desired qualifications

We are looking for directors who bring a range of skills, professional expertise, and lived experience. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in one or more of the following areas:

• Nonprofit governance — prior board experience, ideally in a leadership or officer role (President, Vice-President, or Secretary). Familiarity with the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act and Quebec nonprofit context is an asset.
• Nonprofit finance — accounting, audit, or financial oversight experience; candidates interested in serving as Treasurer or contributing to financial oversight.
• Fundraising — experience with philanthropic, corporate, or grant fundraising, donor relations, or fundraising events. (Directors support fundraising collectively as part of their governance role. There is no individual giving requirement and no personal fundraising target.)
• Community sector — experience in Montreal’s community organizations, particularly in reproductive justice, social services, or frontline support work.
• Education — experience in schools, school service centres, CEGEPs, or education-adjacent organizations.
• Advocacy and public policy — experience advancing policy change through campaigns, coalitions, government relations, or public affairs, whether at the municipal, provincial, or federal level.
• Health care — particularly obstetrics-gynecology, midwifery, sexual and reproductive health, or public health.

We strongly encourage applications from people with lived experience of period poverty and from the communities we serve, including Indigenous peoples, ethnic and cultural minorities, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, newcomers, and people with disabilities.

Expected level of involvement

Time commitment: an estimated 8 to 10 hours per month; up to 15 hours per month for the President and Treasurer.
