Welfare Avenue is a community organization led by students from various fields of study and academic institutions based in both Montreal and Ontario. Our team of staff and volunteers works closely with partnering organizations and community members to address the needs of the populations we serve while fostering inclusion, dignity, and community well-being.
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, organized, and certified Kitchen Coordinator to oversee the planning and supervision of our Community Kitchen Program. This role is essential in ensuring that community kitchen sessions are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with food safety regulations and best practices.
The Kitchen Coordinator will supervise volunteers during meal preparation, maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, and help create a welcoming space where community members can come together to prepare nutritious meals. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about food security, community engagement, and volunteer leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate volunteer activities during Community Kitchen sessions;
- Ensure all food preparation, handling, storage, and cleaning practices comply with applicable food safety regulations;
- Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and organized kitchen environment;
- Provide guidance and basic training to volunteers on food safety, hygiene, and kitchen procedures;
- Assist in planning kitchen activities and meal preparation schedules;
- Work collaboratively with community partners and Welfare Avenue staff to ensure the smooth delivery of Community Kitchen events;
- Encourage teamwork, inclusivity, and a positive volunteer experience;
- Report any health, safety, or operational concerns to the Program Development Coordinator;
- Support continuous improvement by providing recommendations to strengthen the Community Kitchen Program.

Required Qualifications
- Valid Food Handler Certification (MAPAQ, FoodSafe, or another recognized food safety certification accepted in Quebec);
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe food handling practices;
- Ability to supervise volunteers and coordinate kitchen activities.
Preferred (but not required)
- Experience coordinating volunteers in a nonprofit or community setting;
- Experience working in a commercial, institutional, or community kitchen;
- Certification in First Aid and CPR;
- Experience working with food security initiatives, community kitchens, shelters, or meal programs;
- Ability to communicate in both English and French.
