A few words about us

La Remise is a solidarity cooperative run and managed by its members and volunteers.

Our mission is to provide tools, workspaces, and knowledge to foster self-reliance and a more resilient, supportive, and eco-friendly lifestyle. With its two tool libraries, La Remise offers its members access to more than 2,000 tools and other items to borrow. We also offer training sessions, workshops, and shared workspaces where members can carry out their projects with the support of experienced volunteers.

Tasks

As a volunteer at La Remise, you are an integral part of the cooperative and contribute to its growth.

We are currently looking for people interested in joining the Front Desk Committee to help ensure the smooth operation of our two libraries in Villeray or Petite Patrie—whichever you prefer!

Specifically, your role might include:

• Welcoming visitors and members warmly and explaining how the cooperative works;
• Advising users on memberships and helping them find items in the library;
• Managing tool checkouts and returns, while ensuring they are clean and in good working order;
• Managing the cash register (opening, monitoring, and closing the Square system);
• Taking care of our shared space to keep it clean, welcoming, and pleasant;
• Contributing to decision-making within the cooperative.

How the Front Desk Committee works and the onboarding process

To help you feel comfortable and supported, our onboarding process is gradual and adapts to your pace:

1. Discovery Session: You’ll start with an introductory session to explore how the library operates, get familiar with our software, and learn about front desk tasks.
2. Mentoring Period: During your first few months, you’ll work your volunteer shifts alongside experienced volunteers to learn the ropes together, until you feel ready to fly solo.
3. Meetings: The committee meets as needed to discuss improvements to library procedures (1–2 times a year).

Desired qualifications

You don’t need to have customer service experience or know the names and functions of all the tools by heart. Above all, we’re looking for someone who is welcoming, reliable, enjoys interacting with people, and wants to contribute to a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Expected level of involvement

Each volunteer on the front desk committee must be able to cover an entire library shift, which is 2 hours at the Petite-Patrie branch and 3–4 hours at the Villeray branch, plus 10 minutes before and after to open and close the library.

Volunteer benefits (see below) are granted after 3 months of regular involvement, with a minimum of 8 hours of volunteer work per month. Meeting time also counts toward your volunteer hours.

If you can’t commit to 8 hours each month, your help would still be greatly appreciated! And we fully understand that the number of hours each volunteer can offer may vary from month to month.

Even though this is a volunteer position, we want to thank those who regularly contribute to our efforts for more than 3 months by offering:

• Free borrowing of tools and items from the library, including renewals;
• Free access to workshops (Woodworking, Sewing, Bicycles), even outside of regular hours;
• Discounts: 35% off bike repair parts, 15% off member-only workshops led by volunteers, 15% off the use of our fantastic tools, and 15% off the rental of wood lockers.
