Context of the mandate
Come and teach French via Zoom or in person to a group of people, especially newcomers to Canada. Accompanying manuals (teacher and student) and teacher training provided.
Tasks
Desired qualifications
We encourage all who are interested in the values of community building, mutual aid and solidarity to volunteer with us. While we do not ask that individuals have experience in French second language teaching, folks who have taught, tutored or coached are considered an asset. Training is given prior to a volunteer’s first volunteer shift with us. Volunteers must have a proficient level of spoken and written French to be able to volunteer as part of the French program at the Maison de l’amitié. Individuals who wish to volunteer online must have some proficiency in the Zoom or Teams platform and/or must be willing to meet with the program coordinator to learn the basics. This is a great opportunity for those who have interest in improving their communication skills in French.
Expected level of involvement
Volunteers are asked to volunteer anywhere between 1-3 hours each week. The school sessions are over a six week period. Volunteers are expected to take on one of the following positions: teacher, co-teacher, assistant and conversation monitor in a weekly role. Volunteers may also become part of the substitute volunteer team in addition to or in lieu of a regular weekly role. See the following descriptions of each role: Teacher: With the support of an assistant, the teacher plans the lessons, leads and instructs the class, and conducts and supervises the end-of-session examination. Co-Teacher: Two co-teachers work together to jointly plan the lessons, lead and instruct the class, and conducts and supervises the end-of-session examination. In the case of absence of the other co-teacher the co-teacher will step into the sole teacher role. Assistant: Supports a teacher, takes class attendance, offers students assistance, and helps model activities. Conversation monitor : Works solo or jointly with another monitor to lead oral activities and conversations that respond to the interests and levels of the students. Substitute volunteers: Aid in the efforts when individuals as part of the regular team are absent either due to illness or unexpected events.
