The Mentana Community Garden is a place where residents of the Mentana public housing complex can learn about urban agriculture. It is a space for mutual support, building connections, and social engagement. Residents gather every Monday to tend the garden, chat, and share the harvest. Everyone leaves with fresh vegetables and unsold food from local grocery stores. YOUR ROLE During the activity (10:30 a.m.): After the activity (11:30 a.m.): The garden has become a unifying and engaging space for the public housing community, aimed at breaking down isolation. The social aspect is central to this activity. We are therefore looking for two reliable volunteers who will take turns working every other Monday for a period of at least two months to maintain the connections that have been formed. It is not required to get your hands dirty or to have gardening experience.
Before the residents arrive (10:00 a.m.):
- Assist the facilitator in setting up the sunshade, tables, and chairs, and preparing drinks and snacks
- Help with garden maintenance
- Chat and socialize with the public housing residents (build connections)
- Help distribute unsold food and garden produce to participants
- Assist the facilitator in tidying up the site
