Volunteers needed for reading assistance in French for children referred by their elementary school for learning difficulties. This volunteer activity takes place at the child’s home.

Qualities required : fluency in French, loving children and reading, being patient and a good listener.

Reading at home is at the heart of our action. Every year, children with learning difficulties are referred to us by first-grade and second-grade teachers in elementary schools.

Following this referral, our pedagogical coordinators visit the families of these children at home, to assess the child’s needs and introduce the parents to the approach of our reading support program.

To offer this service to a family, JAME must also recruit and train volunteer readers. Once recruited, volunteers receive basic training to prepare them for their match.

Each volunteer is then matched with a child, and visits the child’s home once  a week for about an hour. The meeting always takes place in the presence of a parent.

The aim of these meetings is to develop the child’s taste for reading and to support his or her school learning by reading books, telling stories, and playing literacy games.

Our approach is based on the pleasure of reading, and the most important thing is to create a warm, trusting atmosphere in which children can feel comfortable progressing at their own pace. We never force a child to read, as this is the best way to create the opposite effect to the one we’re aiming for!

Important : You must be available at least 6 months, during the school year (Sept to June) for 1 hr per week between 4 pm and 7 pm or on weekends.
