Summer is made for fun... and getting involved!

Summer has a unique way of transforming our everyday lives. As warm weather settles in, days grow longer, parks and public spaces come alive again, outdoor activities multiply, and the city takes on a different rhythm, animated by a renewed energy.

The season also brings many opportunities to get involved, build connections, and take part in meaningful human experiences. Summer volunteering takes many forms, whether outdoors, with family, or at the heart of Montreal’s major events.

Outdoors: Everything comes to life thanks to volunteers

Until June 15, 2026, Outdoor Volunteering Month is taking place across the province under the theme “Ici, tout prend vie grâce aux bénévoles” (Everything comes to life thanks to volunteers). Led by Réseau plein air Québec, in collaboration with the Réseau de l’action bénévole du Québec and the Conseil québécois du loisir, this initiative highlights the essential role of volunteering in organizations working in the outdoor sector.

From trail maintenance to improving accessibility and supporting the vitality of natural spaces, many of these organizations rely heavily on volunteer engagement to sustain their activities and ensure the quality of their offerings.

Outdoor volunteering provides many ways to contribute, depending on each person’s interests and availability. Numerous volunteer workdays and projects are currently taking place, including trail maintenance, site development in natural areas, and support for outdoor events. These opportunities are concrete and often one-off, making them ideal for discovering volunteering or getting involved in a different way, at the pace of the season.

Volunteering as a family: planting the seeds of engagement early

Summer is also a special time to experience volunteering as a family. With the school break and more flexible schedules, many parents look for meaningful activities to share with their children.

As highlighted in this previous article, introducing young people to volunteering helps foster autonomy, empathy, and openness toward others. Preparing donations at home, taking part in a collection drive, helping out at a neighbourhood event, or joining a community activity are all ways of showing that every gesture matters.
Volunteering is often learned by example. By seeing the adults around them get involved, children come to understand that they can take concrete action to improve their environment and contribute to collective well-being.

A summer filled with major events

In Montreal, summer also means festivals, cultural events, and large gatherings. Music, food, street arts, sports, and cinema help bring the city to life, attracting thousands of people eager to enjoy its unique energy.

Behind many of these large-scale events are, once again, volunteers. Welcoming visitors, providing logistical support, assisting teams, and offering information to the public: their contribution is often essential to the smooth running of activities.

Volunteering at a festival or event not only contributes to Montreal’s cultural life, but also offers a stimulating experience, the chance to meet new people, and a behind-the-scenes look at major events.

An engagement shaped by summer

Summer volunteering reminds us that there is no single way to get involved. Between outdoor activities, family initiatives, and the vibrant energy of major festivals, everyone can find a form of engagement that reflects and inspires them.

Getting involved in the summer also means discovering Montreal differently and experiencing the season at the heart of its collective energy, while helping build more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant communities.
