Pride is a time to celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, their journeys, their contributions, and the solidarity that enriches our communities. It is also a reminder that inclusion requires ongoing commitment.
Beyond the celebrations, Pride invites us to reflect on the spaces we create together. Can everyone find their place within them? Do our environments allow each person to fully participate, be recognized, and contribute according to their own lived experiences?
At the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal (VBM), we believe that volunteering is much more than an act of helping others. It is a way to build connections, participate in community life, and contribute to a more caring and inclusive society. For many people from 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, volunteering can be a space for connection, self-affirmation, and belonging.
Inclusion is built through everyday actions
Creating welcoming environments does not rely solely on broad statements or intentions. It is built through concrete actions, sometimes simple but essential:
- Taking the time to listen to the realities and experiences of others;
- Recognizing the diversity of identities and life journeys;
- Using respectful and inclusive language;
- Questioning certain habits or ways of doing things;
- Speaking up when comments or behaviours contribute to exclusion;
- Valuing the contributions of all people who choose to get involved.
Inclusion is a collective learning process. It requires curiosity, humility, and a willingness to continue growing and evolving.
Volunteering as a space for solidarity
Community organizations play an important role in creating spaces where people can get involved with confidence and a sense of safety. To do so, it is essential to recognize the diverse experiences and realities that make up our communities.
An inclusive volunteer environment is one where every person can show up with their own story, skills, and identity, without having to hide or change who they are in order to be accepted.
It is also an environment that recognizes the richness of human diversity. Volunteers bring their knowledge, perspectives, and experiences, helping organizations become stronger and better reflect the communities they serve.
Celebrating Pride, taking action all year long
Pride is an opportunity to celebrate progress, recognize the contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and strengthen the solidarities that unite us.
But a commitment to inclusion does not end after a few days of celebration. It continues through our everyday choices, through the ways we welcome, listen to, and make space for every person.
On the occasion of Pride, the VBM invites you to celebrate diversity and continue building, together, volunteer spaces where everyone can contribute, thrive, and be fully themselves.
